Title: No CD-DA? Bummer.
Post by: Galager on August 17, 2012, 05:36:25 AM
I frequently have people come up and ask if I can play a specific song on a CD they have.  I guess now I have a genuine excuse why I can't.  However, the logic stated in Esperance explanation page saying that nobody uses CDs anymore is not quite right.  I doubt many use exclusively CDs but there is still more than the occasional request to play a song from a CD.

tbh I would never play content provided by a client or their guests unless I had chance to preview it, at least i am not now lying when I used to say sorry I can't play cds!
Although I would be reluctant to stick a cd or memory stick/sd card into a PC/Laptop that I was using at a someones special occasion
unless I new the contents where safe, my gig machine only ever connects to the internet for upgrades to ots (i.e not very often :p)

If clients need or want a "special" track then this is arranged before the function!

So its no big loss to me :)

We never used that function ourselfs. In the occasion we have to play a CD, we either use the anyway built in CD-player in the flightcase, or better, one of us is ripping the CD on one of the spare notebooks around (usully the Light control PC, which is anyway OTS backup system) and then copy the OTS file to the NAS and refresh the prod system. E.g. this happens in he beginning of a gig when artists show up with a CD and a piece of paper. There it says, play 5, 3, 7, break, 1, 4, wait for keyword of artist, then 8.... that's where I love to have it in OTS in a playlist in the right order and the titles named with some of the instructions...makes life easier

I agree with MusicmadUK, I would never insert any foreign object into my gig machine .... Always Practice Safe S** !

Any function that requires specific customer supplied content must be provided at least 3 days prior to the event. This way, the customer can forget about it because they have a 100+ other things to worry about & I/we can be prepared.

I am rather fortunate in that I have an OtsAV loaded PC that I use for Sandboxing & editing and all work is done there, before transferring to external HD's that get hooked up to the gig laptop.

Got to say I will miss this functionality ,  was really useful particularly at fetes when you have dance troops or martial arts team bring their cd's up. Easy enough to get around just play on windows media player on my backup laptop; but a shame none the less.
