I use Promo Only UK DVDs.  I can't comment on the subsription service.  No trouble converting the DVDs - personally I use DVD Decrypter and load the VOBs into Ots Studio.  If you have a system close to or below the minimum recommended specs for video, you can reduce the quality using TMPGEnc (it's a very good program and not that expensive).  A tutorial for that is included in the OtsAV Video Tutorial - under optimised video.

Have fun,
Darryl

I subscribe to promo only and find it very good....I get sent the dvd which I then rip and rename myself.  bit of a pain, but that's OTS for you.

The only problem I've seen with promo only and converting to Ots is that some of their videos have "Intros" which are separate from when the video starts the actual music part and many times when Ots converts the whole DVD these Intros are normalized into a different volume from the rest of the song so when you play the 2 parts consecutively they are at different volumes and causes an abrubt change in sound between the two. I've posted before about this but haven't heard any good answers on how to disable the normalization for this. The only thing I can think of is to paste the two parts of the video back together in a video editor and then convert it to Ots. It's not a huge deal because I would usually play only the 2nd part of the video in a live situation, but there are times when you want to play the intro before the video.

I do music only, and don't have a problem with PO CDs.  I still don't have OTS in a production environment though.

I never include the intros...why you would want them?

I thought the same thing about the intros.  I run all my main videos through pinnacle and redo alot of the videos with new music to remove intros and cut scenes.

Ok, say you're in a club and it's early in the night, no one is dancing, you may want the intro.

hmmm still don't agree....maybe people would start dancing if there were no intros!

Well then I'll agree to disagree. Many people like to socialize and drink first b4 dancing so when they're sitting around they can watch the full videos with the intros. And that's besides the point, IF I WANT TO PLAY INTROS I should be able to play the intros without a problem when I play the intro and then the rest of the video. Don't be a H8r, H8ytr

Me personally, I don't mind intros themselves, the darn cut scences are what tick me off.  Or sound effects in the videos.  Ya'll know what i mean.  I'd rather redo the audio so i know that I'll always be playing a "good" version of the video.  I do keep the originals, just incase something comes along down the road.

Ditto, an incredible pain to have to edit the videos.

It'd be rather nice if Ots Studio included an edit chunk - where you could cut sections out non destructively.

Yes, I really hate the video "breaks" and sound effects. I think they should include original and DJ edits of videos! Or just the DJ edits would be fine too.

I dont know why Promo Only bother with separating the Intro,

surely most are capable of finding the cue point they want,,

also, nowadays, I guess far more people use Software to play vids rather than Pioneer DVJ's....

Hmm... good question.  I don't know how many people are still using the DJ DVD players vs the various software products out there.  However, I know plenty of people who think computers are unreliable and would rather have a dedicated hardware player.

Personally, I know that computers are unreliable - that's why I have two of them!

yeah,,

what I would REALLY like,,,would be a hard drive version of the Pioneer DVJ1000

or put another way, a Video version of the Pioneer CDJ2000 or even the Denon DNHD5500

I'm sure that will happen eventually,,maybe a couple of years away ???

does seem stupid to me that we have to rely on a PC..

( sorry, that might not be appreciated on a PC Software forum, but hopefully you'll get point )

The advantages of the pc solution include the ability to upgrade the software and add new features. Also many of us have got our computers to do things specifically for our personal needs. For instance, I was running karaoke alongside Ots Dj before it could do karaoke. I was able to control both winamp and OtsDj to do the fade/mix into the karaoke. I couldn't have added this functionality to my cd players!

It's pros and cons: Reliability and stability vs functionality. Choose whatever you are happy with!

Have fun,
Darryl

Hey guys - I totally recommend Smashvidz.com. They have several different versions of each song plus, new songs are updated alot faster than promo only. You will have to convert from mp4 but well worth it!

I reccomend mixmash mpeg2 for ots. No renaming. Imports directly to ots studio and sounds and looks great. They now bring out new material every two weeks.

I'm not sure of the legality of the Smashvidz site, since they are editing the videos for DJ use when they are not the copyright holders.  I like the idea though, but the cost is quite high since you have to purchase the original music as well as subscribe to their service.

Have fun,
Darryl.

My understanding is you only have to own 1 copy to legally play the song. You can purchase about any song there is on napster for $1 usd. (without having to but the rest of the songs you don't need. )
